AIEDTECHMEDIA Exclusive: OpenAI Launches GPT-4.5 – The Future of AI Scaling

GPT-4.5 is here, and OpenAI’s latest generative AI model is larger and more compute-intensive than ever. This new iteration is designed to enhance user understanding, improve emotional intelligence, and refine aesthetic judgment. As part of a research preview, users eager to experience GPT-4.5 firsthand must subscribe to OpenAI’s $200-a-month ChatGPT Pro plan.

The Competitive AI Landscape in 2025

The year 2025 has already seen a wave of groundbreaking AI model releases. Anthropic recently introduced a hybrid reasoning model for its Claude chatbot. Meanwhile, DeepSeek, a Chinese AI research team, made waves by developing a powerful model on a minimal budget, pressuring OpenAI to release a “mini” version of its reasoning model last month.

Unlike DeepSeek’s R1, which aims for efficiency with fewer resources, GPT-4.5 follows OpenAI’s path of massive scaling. According to researchers involved in its development, this model’s sheer size allows for a better grasp of human emotions and interactions, reducing hallucination frequency. “If you know more things, you don’t need to make things up,” says Mia Glaese, head of OpenAI’s alignment and human data teams.

Smarter AI, Streamlined Experience

OpenAI is reimagining how users interact with different AI models. Rather than selecting from a confusing dropdown menu, the system will now automatically determine the most suitable model based on the user’s prompt. This move aims to make ChatGPT more intuitive and user-friendly.

Nick Ryder, head of OpenAI’s foundations-in-research team, emphasizes the importance of this transition. “Saying this is the last non-reasoning model really means we’re striving towards a future where users are seamlessly routed to the best model for their needs.”

Enhanced Compute, Optimized Learning

OpenAI remains committed to pushing the boundaries of AI through extensive pretraining. “By increasing the amount of compute we use, expanding our datasets, and refining training techniques, we continue advancing the frontier of unsupervised learning,” Ryder explains. Despite its massive scale, OpenAI asserts that GPT-4.5 maintains interpretability, ensuring that insights gained from smaller models still apply.

Benchmark Performance & User Experience

Early tests indicate that GPT-4.5 outperforms previous models in language tasks but lags behind OpenAI’s o3-mini model in mathematical reasoning. While it delivers slight improvements in science-related queries, its primary strengths lie in writing and programming, where interactions feel more natural.

Although the model is not part of OpenAI’s “o” series of reasoning models, CEO Sam Altman hinted at its internal codename, “Orion,” and confirmed it as the company’s final non-chain-of-thought model. Future ChatGPT iterations will likely integrate multiple AI capabilities into a single, seamless experience, eliminating the need for manual model selection.

Rollout Timeline & Features

GPT-4.5 is first available to Pro users, with rollouts planned for Plus and Team users next week, followed by Enterprise and Edu accounts. Notably, it supports web search, canvas features, and file/image uploads, though AI Voice Mode remains unavailable at launch.

With GPT-4.5, OpenAI reinforces its leadership in AI development. As competition in the AI industry intensifies, OpenAI’s commitment to scaling and refining its models ensures its continued presence at the forefront of the generative AI revolution.

Stay tuned to AIEDTECHMEDIA for further in-depth analysis and hands-on testing of GPT-4.5 and the future of AI.
